Today is the perfect day to share with you why I live my life the way I do. I decided when I had children that I wanted to give the healthiest environment that I possibly could so that they could thrive.
I cook almost every meal, from scratch. We eat very few prepackaged foods because I want to know what they are putting into their bodies. I buy our meat and veggies from local farmers so I know how these animals were well cared for and I know for certain what they were fed. I clean our home without toxic chemicals, and am very careful about the products we clean our bodies with.
I very much believe that all of the chemicals we subject ourselves to on a daily basis have an effect not only on our bodies but on the earth as well. As a parent it is my duty to protect my children from them. If you are still thinking in your head that she is a little crazy and really a little Windex isn’t going to hurt anyone, then you are fooling yourself. It’s OK if you want to bury your head in the sand, that is your life and your an adult. But your children don’t get to chose.
Windex contains 2- butoxyethanol which is listed in the U.S State of California as a hazardous substance found to be carcinogenic. So really how good to you feel using Windex when you NOW know that it is potentially carcinogenic. And let me tell you that Windex is among the least concerning of the traditional cleaners. As soon as I started investigating the contents of my cleaners I was totally freaked out and stopped using them instantly. I urge you to start putting thought into the products you bring into your home. Unfortunately it isn’t easy to find out what your cleaners contain. The best way that I have found is to google the product and then the letters msds, which stands for Materials Safety Data Sheet. It is required by law to have a list of the ingredients. Then once you have the ingredient list google the name and read what it’s effects are.
Here is what I found when I looked up Comet.
Here is the MSDS as you can see it contains Silica Quartz and here is what the World Health Organization has to say about Silica Quartz. Long story short repeated exposure has been found to cause lung cancer as well as many autoimmune diseases including Lupus, scleroderma, and rheumatoid arthritis.
My job as a parent is to keep my children safe. Safe does not mean hiding my head in the sand and pretending that these risks are not real. THEY ARE.
Not only are these traditional cleaners toxic in our homes but they are toxic when they are produced. During the production of these chemicals there is a large amount of waste water produced containing chemicals that destroy our environment. Not to mention the plastic that must be produced for each individual bottle of Windex, which is then added to the huge mountain of plastic bottles that are tossed each day.
I am not telling you this to scare you. On the contrary, I am sharing this with you so that you have the knowledge and power to make the right decision for you and your family. Ignoring this information is a choice. You are choosing to discount what I am sharing with you. Maybe you feel like it’s ok to expose yourself and children to these chemicals. Maybe you are telling yourself that she is making a mountain out of a molehill and you have been using these for years with no problems.Whatever your reasons I hope you feel confident in them because as I mentioned before, your children don’t get to chose. What would they want?
You may think that switching to non- toxic is more expensive well that is not necessarily the case. Take a look at this.
and check out how switching can save some serious plastic from the landfills.
And what about the company where the products are produced? 100% carbon neutral. That’s right they offset 100% of their carbon emissions.
And did I mention that they work?
Don’t believe me? Oprah, Dr. Oz, and Dr.Wangari Maathai (Nobel Peace Prize Winner) to name a few, have teamed up with Shaklee because of their outstanding standards to high quality, earth friendly products.
OK, OK enough already. If you are ready to make the change here is a great place to start.
The Get Clean Starter Kit is the package I started with and I highly recommend it. It has been over 2 years that we have been using exclusively Shaklee products. I loved them so much that I started to work with the company as well. We share the same values so it just made sense.

Hi Sarah! It’s been a while…I love your new blog look, the colours everything…you are a fantastic mum/woman!
I love your products and am seriously thinking of buying the starter kit…We are on the move at the moment so not such a good time but when we settle into our new home I’ll definitely send you a message. Have a fantastic week! x
Thank you! I usually use Seventh Generation at Whole Foods but I’m guilty of using other brands for things like clothing detergent and the dreaded stain removers! What has been your experience with Shaklee’s stain remover? Does it really get out tough stains? I’m seriously considering buying the kit but I want to know a little more first. Thank again for your informative post!
I love their stain remover! My kids are well…. dirty. I use the liquid detergent for spot treatment and it gets out everything, grass stains, you name it. Tye nature bright is also great for stains. They work better than any of the others I have ever tried. Including Shout. LOVE THEM!
Thank you for posting this! A little bit off subject but in relation….I have been obsessing about the chemicals in deodorant after my 7 & 9 yr. old recently started needing it. Have you researched it at all? Top ingredient in most deodorants, including mine is aluminum (linked to early Alzheimers, some cancers including breast & other concerns) & most also contain propylene glycol. Even some of the “natural” ones have hidden the alum. & claim to be natural salt. Its really shocking that its allowed in products My family and a few friends roll their eyes, call me a hypochondriac, bla bla so I understand what your saying. Please fill me in if you know of a deodorant that is safe & works! As for the cleaners, I was very interested to read your article. I saw Alicia Silverstone was discussing this on a talk show & I missed most of it. I also heard John Travolta’s wife believes that cleaning agents caused their son to have the problems he did. Its all very scary so even if some don’t want to hear it, I appreciate you exposing it. The more its talked about, eventually people will hear.
Hi Lindsey
Yay, so glad you are on this path!! The more that start making the change the better. As far as deodorants without aluminum. I have had pretty good luck with the Tom’s of Main Lemongrass. It actually does work and smells pretty good! Let me know if you have any other questions, I love talking about this:)
