I found this table on Craigslist last week and had to bring her home for a makeover. She is sturdy, seats 8. and has great lines.
Before
A little dated with the yellow paint. The top was once a honey but has seen better days and has lots of dings and dents. These before pictures were actually taken after I had started stripping the top. As you can see I still had a ways to go.
Here she is after stripping and sanding. All clean! I didn’t go crazy trying to make it perfect. There are still lots of little scratches and imperfections. I wanted it to look like it has been used and loved.
I stained the top with Minwax Red Mahogany and sealed it with 5 coats of wipeable poly in satin, sanding in-between each coat with 220 grit sand paper. The satin finish gives it a great hand rubbed finish but with great protection for heavy use. The bottom I painted lightly with Valspar’s Antique White in semi-gloss and sealed it with the wipeable poly. You can still see a tiny bit of the yellow peeking through here and there which gives it a little bit of interest, I think.

Gorgeous! I just love the contrasting colors. It's such a beautiful look. It reminds me of an expensive Pottery Barn table.

I love this table! I found an old round oak table top and I have to add the legs to it. You have inspired me to paint it exactly like this. The table will go in my kitchen, I cannot wait to start on my project.

I love how your table turned out. Beautiful job! (I have been planning on doing this finish on my kitchen table but have been debating on whether or not to distress the white legs. I've seen it look great both ways. After seeing your table I'm liking the non-distressed look a little better.)
What a beautiful table. You did a fantastic job. Thanks for linking to the party.
It's beautiful!
The color on top contrasts to nicely with the legs, well done. Craigslist finds can be so rewarding, they just need a little effort.
LOVE it!! Great inspiration for today. Thanks for sharing.
Gorgeous table! Love the finish!
HI Sarah, I have been refinishing my table and despite stripping and sanding like crazy, my stain went on really blotchy. Have you ever had this happen? Did you have to give your table multiple coats of stain to get that color? I actually found your table when I was looking for solutions and hope you don’t mind me picking your brain about this….I’m so frustrated!

Hi Sarah! You have such a gift for re-finishing furniture and running your home, love reading your blog. I am getting ready to re-do a similar table. What product did you use to strip th!e old finish? Also any suggestions on how to keep the stain from going on blotchy and creating uneven color? Thanks a lot!
